The Hidden Toxins in Conventional Skincare – And Why We Avoid Them
For decades, the beauty industry has sold us products that promise glowing skin, youthfulness, and perfection. But behind the pretty packaging, many conventional skincare products contain chemicals that can harm both our skin and overall health. Some of these ingredients were introduced as far back as the 1970s and 80s, became extremely popular in the 90s, and are still found on store shelves today.
At SKOOKAA, we believe beauty should never come at the expense of your health. That’s why we avoid these questionable ingredients entirely. Let’s explore some of the most notorious ones that science has linked to skin irritation, hormone disruption, and even more serious risks.
Parabens – The Preservatives That Disrupt Hormones
What they are: Parabens (like methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben) are synthetic preservatives used to stop mold and bacteria from growing in creams and lotions.
The problem: Research has shown that parabens can mimic estrogen in the body, potentially disrupting hormone balance. Studies have even found parabens inside breast tissue samples. While the debate continues, many experts recommend avoiding them as a precaution.
Still used? Yes, although many brands are now going “paraben-free.”
Sulfates – The Harsh Foaming Agents
What they are: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) are detergents used in shampoos, cleansers, and toothpaste to create foam.
The problem: They strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness, sensitivity, and irritation. SLES is often contaminated with a byproduct called 1,4-dioxane, a possible human carcinogen.
Still used? Yes, especially in cheaper shampoos, face washes, and body washes.
Phthalates – The Silent Plasticizers
What they are: Phthalates (like DEP, DBP, DEHP) are chemicals used to make plastics flexible and are often hidden in fragrances to help scents “stick” longer.
The problem: They’re known endocrine disruptors (hormone disruptors) and have been linked to reproductive issues and developmental problems.
Still used? Unfortunately yes, often disguised under the vague term “fragrance” on ingredient lists.
Formaldehyde & Formaldehyde-Releasing Preservatives
What they are: Some preservatives (like DMDM Hydantoin, Quaternium-15, and Imidazolidinyl urea) slowly release formaldehyde to prevent bacterial growth.
The problem: Formaldehyde is a known human carcinogen and a skin irritant, even at low levels.
Still used? Banned in some countries, but still present in certain shampoos, nail polishes, and creams elsewhere.
Ethoxylated Compounds (PEGs & “-eth” Ingredients)
What they are: These are ingredients like PEGs (polyethylene glycols) and ceteareth or oleth compounds, often used as thickeners or emulsifiers.
The problem: During production, they can be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane (a possible carcinogen) and ethylene oxide (a known carcinogen).
Still used? Yes, very common in creams, cleansers, and even baby products.
Synthetic Fragrances
What they are: Artificial fragrances are chemical blends (sometimes hundreds of compounds) designed to give skincare its signature scent.
The problem: They’re one of the biggest causes of allergies, skin irritation, and headaches. They may also contain hidden phthalates.
Still used? Widely – from lotions to sunscreens to deodorants.
Mineral Oil & Petroleum Byproducts
What they are: Derived from petroleum, these include mineral oil, petrolatum, and paraffin.
The problem: While technically safe if highly refined, they create an artificial barrier on the skin that clogs pores and doesn’t allow skin to “breathe.” Lower-quality versions may also contain impurities.
Still used? Yes, in everything from lip balms to body creams.
Why We Say No at SKOOKAA
At SKOOKAA, we’ve made a conscious choice: no parabens, no sulfates, no phthalates, no formaldehyde, no PEGs, no synthetic fragrances, and no petroleum byproducts.
Instead, we use ingredients that work with your skin, not against it – plant oils, botanical extracts, and safe, eco-friendly preservatives. Because beauty should be safe, clean, and honest.
